Santa Cruz County firefighters help battle Soberanes Fire

SANTA CRUZ >> Santa Cruz County firefighters this week joined 5 strike teams to help battle a wildfire near Large Sur that has grown to nearly 3 times the size of the Forest of Nisene Marks State Parks.

Jul 22 in Garrapata State Park and has spread to nearly 30,000 acres from Carmel Highlands to south of the Bixby Bridge, according to Cal Fire. Its cause has not yet been determined.

“Extremely remote and rugged terrain with limited access coupled with warm and dry weather continues to be a challenge in controlling the fire,” Berlant said.

The engine crew is expected to be gone at least sixteen days before they can be relieved. “A lot depends on the weather,” Conrad said.
