It was the year Mike Kaplan became Myq Kaplan. Thank you, Prince.
“He had just changed his name to a symbol and I thought that was weird. Or cool,” Kaplan recalled. “I thought, ‘I could be unusual like Prince.’”
Little did teen Myq know that the brand would stick. And, after so a lot of “ohpyn myq” nights and dozens of TV shows — including 3 with David Letterman — the now 38-year-old stand-up wallows in a modicum of fame.
“People believe it is a calculated show business move,” Kaplan said. “It was a non-calculated, peculiar kid move.”
