Bay Area runs hot and cold this week with temperature extremes

In Gilroy, the heat Tue was driving them crazy for sherbet. Just down the road in Moss Landing, they were trying to hot up with a steamy cup of warm chocolate.

Separated by less than thirty miles, the 2 towns are on opposite ends of the region’s microclimate range — and this week’s wild extremes are giving even veteran forecasters a lesson in how the Bay Area can run both warm and cold.

Tuesday’s biggest disparity was 42 degrees, according to the National Weather Service: 99 in Livermore and 57 at Half Moon Bay, 39 miles away.

The interior valleys hot up, but the sea breeze might not be strong enough to reach that far inland.
